A first person shooter set in the popular Star Wars universe.

Produced by Lucas Arts in 2004, Star Wars Battlefront gives players the chance to run around and shoot things in the Star Wars universe. There are two sides to choose from in each of the two campaigns, each handling a different Star Wars story, but in the end it doesn't make much of a difference. Instead of providing a diverse and complimentary game experience to the rich lore of the Star Wars cannon, the game opts for linear missions made easy by AI that all but shoots itself in the head for you. The saving grace of Star Wars Battlefront is the multi player support. Multi player support is obviously what Star Wars Battlefront is all about.

Game Play

The graphics aren't great, and the AI will have you easily wading through the single player content, but it's the multi player game play that people will ultimately buy this game for. That and the Star Wars brand. having up to 50 players over a LAN, 32 over traditional internet connection, there's lots going on. If you don't get 32 real people, the host can choose to pad the roster with bots. Again, the AI isn't great, but the more soldiers on the field means a more authentic feel to the match. Strategic points scattered throughout the map must be captured by the two teams to win the game. These points also act as respawn points for slain foes, so capturing these points also pushes the enemy back and brings resurrected allies back closer to the fight. Its a great mechanic and adds some great tactical value.

Presentation

The single player content isn't what Star Wars is all about, but it does exist. There are two campaigns, one covering the old Empire versus Rebel and the other covering the factions from the Clone Wars timeline. Graphics aren't great, they're actually sub par and, since the game is over ten years old, they're pretty dated. The single player missions are sprinkled with movie clips to tell bits of story. There isn't anything coherent here, though, and they do a terrible job of telling any kind of story.

Pros

  • Multi player support and great co-operative battlefield expierence

Cons

  • Dated graphics
  • Dumb AI
  • Storytelling could have been much better, instead they called it in
